It began with a clothing brand, just trying to pick a name that sounded good. I came across lemon, and something about it resonated. I looked up the meaning to see if there were any other meanings, and there was—the car. The definition said ‘a vehicle that turns out to have several manufacturing defects’ I felt like a lot of the youth could relate to it, with our varying issues so early in life. To not be defined and weighed down by something so pertinent in your life can be liberating. Now the clothing brand has turned into a community, and now more than ever, the newest definition is ‘a person or thing, especially an automobile, regarded as unsatisfactory, disappointing, or feeble.’ Bringing people into this definition further inserts my belief that we should not define ourselves by flaws. When you have a flaw, think you have a flaw, or someone else thinks you have a flaw. Not Defined By Flaw.

Our Initiatives

By joining, you agree to read and follow our initiatives:

  • Be kind to yourself, to others, and to nature.

  • Don't take anything natural in the environment and don’t harm any life forms.

  • Follow the buddy system by staying in groups of two.

  • Keep our environment safe by packing out all trash, including trash that was there before our arrival, and using safety equipment if necessary.

  • Preserve our presence of connection and protect the nature and health of our bodies by not providing or using substances such as drugs, alcohol, nicotine, vapes, cannabis, and others at or immediately before LEMON meets. Include and support anyone who is uncomfortable with these substances by not bringing any of these substances to LEMON. Include anyone who might use these substances at other times. If someone is seeking help with substance use, encourage them that they can reach out at any time and we will do our best to help identify a solution for them lemon@notdefinedbyflaw.com.

Principles of LEMON

“From the beginning, [the clothing designs that turned into a community called] LEMON has been based off the idea that nothing can be perfect.”

Not Defined By Flaw.

Be kind       Love yourself       Love others       Be patient       Go with the flow

It’s about the community first       Connect and share love with the community

Be in the moment, and don’t overthink       Find ways to share the message

Be in nature       Nature is often the answer       Nature is love and patience

Love is always the answer       Everything changes       Nothing stays the same

Everything stays, but it still changes

Don’t shut down when something upsetting happens, process it

Allow others to lead       Those who are forgiven much, love much

Love doesn’t contradict consequence

Allow others to come up with ideas, and reinforce their ideas.

LEMON is a community based on going outside, being in nature, and not being defined by flaws. Our mission is to help to preserve nature, to help people to be kind to themselves, and to help people to protect the nature of themselves. Our intention is to create a safe space during LEMON activities.

It’s important to be aware that by participating in LEMON, participants agree that LEMON is not liable for any accidents or untoward events that may happen during LEMON activities. Each individual takes on this responsibility for themselves. When a parent (or legal guardian) brings their child, they release LEMON of all liability for their child, and assume that responsibility and liability for themself and their child. When a parent (or legal guardian) has a chaperone for their child, our chaperone form must be signed (please contact us if you’d like to request this form). By entering into this agreement, the parent (or legal guardian) consents that the chaperone will be responsible for their child, and both the parent (or legal guardian) and the chaperone consent to release LEMON of all liability. The chaperone also agrees to remain present with the child at all times.
